hello yqzq101,

Sorry I forgot to mention the module assumes that the build environment is a checked out copy from SVN, and tries to add the revision number to the version file (see ticket #101, http://devel.embedone.com/ticket/101).

You should be able to either use scons to compile directly, or the buildscript by removing the line #51 with "revision.generate" command from the driver.py file if you follow the workaround in #101.

The Embed One Client (ebc) is designed to be used by the developers. Now we are concentrating on the service aspect of the builder. Our new web service will allow software projects that have eb-project file to be built with few clicks of of a mouse.

We have considered a number of approaches to the service implementation. So far we have decided to use approach similar to emi-webgui, with a layer of PHP functionality acting as a proxy agent to facilitate the JSONP communication. Initially the client will be create with JavaScript. Later we a considering possibilities to adopt it to Google Web Toolkit and to create a Gadget.

The logic separation between the client and the PHP is under development.

Zachar, the EMI authentication will be done through password file. Currently, this file is not used on non-embedded boards, but the support for it will be added when the issue tracking ticket #32 is done. We are already working on this, so please be patient.

HTTPS/SSL are supported already via SSL wrappers like STunnel (requires OpenSSL).

Q: Is it possible to install embedone linux to industrial computers (IA32 architecture)?
A: We didn't try it so far. EmbedOne Linux was primarily intended for devices that are much less powerful then industrial computers. It could be possible, but the kernel and the libraries included could be lacking the required functionality for many applications. Maybe you want to use only emid with your existing linux?

Q: can I build my on EmbedOne linux? I need to add some missing packages
A: Eventually yes. EmbedOne builder framework will be the service that allows to do that. Currently we are migrating our own development to use it. As soon as we will successfully start using it, we will make the service available. And we will eventually add support for x86 target architecture.

Q: do you have any schedule for improving emi authentication?
A: The decision about how to do the authentication on standard linux will be taken in the beginning of next week.

Q: what are your plans about encrypted emi-rpc management sessions?
A: One of the features that we have to support one day ASAP.

Q:do you have some instructions for EMI module developers?
A: The instructions on module development will be gradually published under the documentation section. The first document should be published in the nearest future.

Q:can i expand emi to manage applications; for example, i need to use special software used to measure the temperature (i guess this could be emi.stat module) and control cooling system in one of my projects (i can't do this with emi conf since the configuration is not static)?
A1: yes, emi framework is created to be extensible. The documentation about the module design will start appearing ASAP.
A2: By "not static" you mean that you need to have some sort of PID controller were the actually control is done by changing some parameters (i.e. thresholds etc.)? There are three possibilities for the emi framework:
- to fit the control application to the conf module functionality
- to use util module that is somewhat a free form module
- to implement new type of emid module
Options 2&3 are currently not very well supported by the web-gui and may require some customization.

I hope, you will find the answers helpful :). One general comment about the time-frame. Any time estimates for the new features are subject to change, as we also provide professional support to our customers (including on-site support, training, and development of customized solutions). Understandably, their requests do have the priority, and it may impose delays on the good-to-have features.

In general, it is good to post all the feature requests to the "feature request" section of the forum. Even if the ticket is already present in the developers zone for given feature it may affect the priority for the feature implementation.

Hi,

Eventually, there will be a builder framework (EmbedOne Builder) that will allow to build separate modules as well as complete images. We are currently migrating our own processes to use this framework. But it will take a bit of in-house testing, since we want to provide only quality service.

One of the corner stones of this framework is a new concept: "cross-development as a service". We are preparing a publication about this concept. But, in practical terms, a builder service will do the building (it will have all the environment(s)). User will only have to have an EmbedOne Builder Client software do use the service. Within the client it will be possible to specify all the packages that needed to be included in the build. Since we are going to use the same framework, all what we can build will be possible to build with the client.

The idea of integrating to something like iGoogle is very unique, never heard anything like that before. If you can make it work nice, there are crazy possibilities! This season has been pretty crazy and results has noot been so good as expected. Lot's of speculation that both Kimi and Heikki will lose their jobs? Well time will show, what really will happen, in any case it has been good there are new drivers fighting on top also. On the other hand really negative politics and dirty game involved like Renault just showed lately. Anyone else here following Formula one racing, waiting for Singapore sling next?

Hi, and thanks for the feedback. Your comments are very valuable because they help us to target more critical areas for the development work, especially, when there are some real use-cases.

Yes you are right about the authentication. One of the prime targets for the emid are the solutions that run on the embedded systems. The authentication for these systems is relatively straight forward and may rely on the existing user information in passwd file or similar. However, on the standard linux PC (or laptop) authentication may be done in different ways such as fingerprint scanning etc. For that reason we are still deciding what would be a good approach to handle it on PC.

Emid framework is designed to work with any linux. The modules, however, are the glue between the actual operating system components and the emid. And the modules could be hardware/os dependent. Hopefully, when the community around emid will grow and become active, the inflow of 3rd party modules will cover more and more of the linux distributions. However, we will make sure that emid itself is compatible with as many distribution as possible.

If you have any particular error you are interested to know about, you could use the bug reporting functionality of the web-client. It will send to us your message and the information about the current status of the system (configuration, diff and statistics). Alternatively, you could specify the key that you are trying to set and the error here. The web-client is in a prototype and its error reporting is one part that was not really covered.

Method reference will be published relatively soon. There is already a place holder on the documentation pages, but nothing there yet. Is there any particular method you are interested in or are you planning to do your own client? In later case its good to notice that EMI-RPC is encapsulated in JSONP and sent over HTTP. Soon we will have a blog entry about using the JSONP approach.

Hello! I did some testing with emid last night with the instructions you gave me. I was able to figure out that when I use web client I can actually use any username and password (no authentication at all?). Is this the way it should be working?

I was also able to change the hostname by setting the key hostname.hostname as you suggested. However, once I tried using some other keys mentioned in the documentation, i got errors. I assume emid is designed to work with your linux only (by looking at the source code of modules coming together with the source code package). If so, do you plan to make support for other linux distributions as well?

I was reading the source code of emi web client and find out that you have plenty of JSON-RPC type methods supported. However, i can't find any documentation from your website about those. Do you have some kind of documentation available for all the supported methods and parameters?

I found emid very cool framework, but i think you need to make it work so that it can be also used in other linux distributions. I am willing to help you with testing and giving feedback also in the future.

Hi.

It's all like everywhere. You can install it over, but you'll lose the existing firmware. If you want to keep it, make a backup. Do you know, how to do it?

Some more about emid...

EMI is a unified management interface for the system.

When it is used within already pre-build image, there is a default configuration that is being exported at the system start-up. Example of usage: (http://devel.embedone.com/browser/linux/base-files/files/etc/init.d/rcS).

When emid is compiled and launched on the PC there is no default configuration, so on connecting the web client you will see the empty configuration list. You could try to see if emid is working properly by setting the hostname (key: hostname.hostname) for the system through the interface. (refer to the EMI.CONF keys reference for other available keys).

NOTE: root privileges are required to commit these changes.

In the nearest future we are planning to publish the document that will describe the overall system. But do you have a particular usage in mind? Since general documentation may not cover all the capabilities of the emid, we can answer particular questions in much more detail in here.

There are 3 ways to access the emid currently:

1) Using web-client (online)
2)Using web-client (locally)
3)Using emic command line utility on board. (partially functional, in progress).

Does the board have ethernet interface up and running as well? If it does, then just go to the online access page (http://embedone.com/releases/embedone_emi_web_client/online/index.html) and follow the instructions from here: http://embedone.com/support/documentation/embedone-emi-web-client-user-guide/

If cannot have simultaneous internet connection to the board and to the outside world, then you can download the web-client and launch it locally in a browser.

wifimike, current development is on adding some of the key features that were left out from the 1.0 release of EMI. These features include:
- Proper Authentication of EMI-RPC sessions
- Support for EMI-RPC traffic encryption (over SSL)

In addition, we try to get our EB service started for public. EB (EmbedOne Builder) is a new concept for cross development as service. As you might see from our downloads section, currently you can already download the client for this service; however, the service itself is not opened for public yet since we are juggling with the new public source code repository issues. Hopefully, we will sort out these issues soon and are able to open this service for all of you in the near future.

Also, we are looking for adding support for new platforms. In here, we are hoping to get some ideas from the EmbedOne community.

And finally, we try to create a library for EMI-RPC so that developers can create more sophisticated applications (like EMI Web Client) - more easily. The possibilities in here are quite amazing; someone might create a gadgets which are working directly with iGoogle, Google Maps, Orkut etc.

So, we are not done yet. We are committed in continuing to develop EmbedOne Projects and make them available to our community.

Hi, thanks and welcome!

Well, I am sure other guys will write more about the future directions of our work. I will comment about our processes.

Starting from the release date we have entered a transparent development mode, meaning that our development activities are reflected in the developer's zone. ( http://devel.embedone.com/ ). All the defects, enhancements, and other working items are shown in tickets. And yes, all the bugs that are listed in the tickets now are present in the released versions. However, released software is stable. Most of the tickets are concerned with the missing features/further development, and very few of them are with high severity. Same list also presents the new features (as enhancements).

Hello Mazer and welcome.

EB Client (EmbedOne Builder Client) is a different thing. It's counterpart is the EmbedOne Builder service. The information about it will be available at some point of time in the nearest future.

On our download page we have an image for the ADI Pronghorn SBC-250. If it is the same board that you have please follow the instructions from here: http://embedone.com/support/documentation/embedone-linux-installation-instructions/

The installation image includes emid (deamon). To connect to the emid you can use our online client version: http://embedone.com/releases/embedone_emi_web_client/online/index.html or you can download the same client from our download section and use it locally. The initial credentials for the system are user: root, password: admin.

Hello Zachar and welcome to our forums.

Yes there is considerable amount of the documentation and there is going to be even more because some areas of the EMI framework are not covered yet. EMI framework in general consists of the following parts:
1)emid (daemon)
2)emid modules
3)emi clients

Daemon is a service that binds together information/control from different EMI modules, responds to requests from clients, and performs session management.

Modules are linking host system to the daemon by registering via defined interfaces. EMI modules can implement different control, data mining, etc, functionality.

Finally emid have to be accessed via the EMI-RPC protocol by the client software to actually control or query the device.

Currently the available documentation covers:
- the client-side development (namely, the protocols that client should comply to in order to successfully communicate with the emid instance)
- the configuration keys for the existing configuration modules
- the prototype web client that we have developed in EmbedOne to demonstrate the capabilities of EMI framework.

If you are interested in the inner-workings of the emid itself, or about the module's API, or other parts of the framework, please let us know and we will speed up the release of the related documentation.

Hello! First of all, congratulations for your new open source project. I can imagine how much work it must have been for you to pull out all those projects at the same time!

I would like to know what are the features you are currently working on? I am mostly interested in your EmbedOne Linux and also the development tools side. I would be happy to learn more.

Also, If I can understand correctly, you are going to have something different for the developers than just traditional Linux cross development tools. Can you tell me more about those. I can't find much info from your website.

What is the status of your bugs vs. just released versions. How "stable" is your software at the moment?
